Recap on the “Open Data Maturity Report 2020” Data Talks

Discussing the report with its lead author, Laura van Knippenberg

Last week we were joined by the Support Centre for Data Sharing team and Laura van Knippenberg, Lead author of the Open Data Maturity Report 2020.

The Open Data Maturity report is an assessment of open data maturity of all EU Member States and several EFTA-countries. In doing so, the report assesses the open data quality, the extent to which open data influences local or national policy, the impact that open data creates, and the level of development of the national open data portal.

On the basis of these four categories, an overall score for open data maturity is computed, resulting in a ranking. This ranking classifies member states as trend-setters, scoring the highest in terms of open data maturity, as well as fast-trackers, followers, and beginners, scoring the lowest. This year’s top performers being Denmark, France, Ireland, and Spain.

In discussing the overall results from this year’s report Laura witnesses an overall “clear peak in open data maturity performance in 2020” explaining that, many European countries have improved and extended their open data practices and actively engaged with communities of open data re-users. This was one of the positive results of the pandemic as the situation asked for up-to-date health figures to inform national response strategies and coordinate actions.
