BlindSquare: A Finnish application for improved accessibility

The Finnish application helps visually impaired people navigate their surroundings

BlindSquare is a Finnish application that aims to help visually impaired people navigate their surroundings. In addition, the application aids users to get to a given location by alerting them of obstacles in their environment. The application describes the environment, identifies potential hazards and announces points of interest, street intersections and locations which users have saved using the GPS location and data from FourSquare and OpenStreetMap. The information is communicated to the user through a dedicated speech synthesizer.

BlindSquare is one of the over 450 use cases published on the European Data Portal. If you are aware of another inspiring use case, share your experience and knowledge about different applications and websites using open data with the EDP via mail, Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.
