New European Interoperability Framework adopted

New EIF launched on 23 March

The European Commission has adopted the new European Interoperability Framework (EIF) which will help European public administrations to coordinate their digitisation efforts when delivering public services. The new framework provides a common approach to public administrations across Europe in their efforts to design and implement end-to-end and better quality digital public services for citizens and businesses.

The new EIF is the result of an existing framework's revision in a way that new EU policies (e.g. Directive on the re-use of Public Sector Information, the INSPIRE Directive, the eIDAS Regulation), emerging technological trends (big and open data, cloud) and lessons learned from running interoperability programmes are taken into account.

The framework offers public administrations concrete recommendations on how to improve governance of their interoperability activities, establish cross-organisational relationships, streamline processes supporting end-to-end digital services, and ensure that both existing and new legislation do not compromise interoperability efforts. One of the key principles of the new EIF is 'openness', and the framework contains recommendations on the publication of Open Data.

More information about the new EIF can be found here.
