European Commission publishes vision on the three O's
Research and innovation are a key component for numerous thematic policies of the European Commission. For example, it is central to the Digital Single Market as it permits industry to benefit from new digital technologies while also creating new jobs and economic growth. At the same time, a flourishing and innovative research community in Europe is a necessity to fulfil the EU's ambitions on green energy and climate change reduction. In order to ensure that Europe's research community continues to be at the frontier of innovation and be able to fulfil these needs, the European Commission has set out three goals - Open Innovation, Open Science and Open to the World -for the upcoming years.
These goals, presented in 2015, are used to ensure that research and innovation is and remains to be an essential element across the European Commission's political priorities. Although the goals do not mean a rigorous shift of policy, they do reinforce existing programmes such as Horizon2020 and strengthen policies such as the European Research Area. To provide insights behind the concepts of Open Innovation, Open Science and Open to the World with tangible examples on how they are applied, the European Commission has published a new book on the topic. In this book, all elements of the 'Open' approach are presented and highlighted, including the role of Open Data in research.
