Looking back at the EU Datathon 2019

Finalists from across Europe pitched their open data applications

On 13 June, the EU Datathon 2019 took place in Brussels, Belgium. Twelve finalists from across Europe pitched their ideas to the jury and visitors. The finalists were tasked with developing applications that offer new insights or services in one of the three challenges: innovative ideas through EU open data; new insights into economics and finance; tackling climate change. The competition was organised by the EU's Publications Office, in partnership with the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council.

The winners from the three different challenges were each awarded with €15,000. The runners-up in each challenge won €7,000, and the third placed teams €3,000. The winners of the EU Datathon 2019 are:

Challenge 1: Innovative ideas through EU open data: 'The Smartfiles Network', that makes PDF files with EU and national court rulings easily accessible, searchable and shareable, thereby helping people to understand the evolution and connectedness of case law.

Challenge 2: New insights into economics and finance: 'Econ Cartography', that provides intuitive and interactive visualisations to explore the complex landscape of the EU economy.

Challenge 3: Tackling climate change: 'Chloe Irrigation Systems', that provides a platform which monitors and optimises irrigation to reduce water waste and cost, while increasing crop yield.
