A Chief Digital Officer for London?

Greater London Authority announces new position during London Tech Week

After the presentation of the City Data Strategy in March, the Greater London Authority is preparing the next steps necessary to assure a solid implementation of this ambitious strategy. To oversee this process, the authorities announced the appointment of a Chief Digital Officer (CDO) in the upcoming period. This is in line with the commitment of the recently appointed Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to develop data and innovative tech solutions to make the city's public services easier to access and more efficient.

Anticipating on this new role, a number of authorities involved in the innovation policies published a paper to describe what this new function should entail. They identified three areas for the CDO to be active in: providing policy advice and digital expertise, championing digital transformation in London and exchanging best practices. Part of a successful data transformation, they also urged the City of London to create an Open Data charter to set a standard for "Clear, transparent and intelligent use of public data".

During the event, participants praised the data-sharing initiatives in London but emphasised the importance of a coherent and horizontal Open Data policy for all authorities to reap the full benefits - for example by the establishment of one central office for data.
