Scaling up the European Data Economy

What happened during the European Data Forum?

In the last few days of the Dutch EU Presidency the annual European Data Forum took place on 29 and 30 June. The iconic Evoluon building in Eindhoven, built to celebrate 75 years of Philips, now formed the perfect venue to discuss the future of Europe's Data Economy. During the two-day conference, representatives from the public and private sector came together to exchange thoughts on how to harness the power of Big and Open Data. A necessary topic according to Alexander Rinnooy Kan, University Professor of Economics and Business Studies at the University of Amsterdam, who described the current status of the data economy in his address entitled "Welcome to the revolution".

While the presentations touched upon a broad array of subjects, from self-driving cars of TomTom to State Start-ups in France, they all shared a common value: opening up, linking and using data holds the future. When doing so however, it is important to keep in mind whom the service is meant for, namely the user. In between the presentations, an exhibition was held where a diverse range of companies, start-ups and projects were presented. These ranged from companies supported by ODINE to academic programs in Data Science to established multinationals. With a diverse mix of speakers and participants the European Data Forum once more proved to be one of the most inspiring data events of the year.
