Geospatial Open Data available from official national sources across Europe

New study from the Open European Location Services (ELS) Project

Geospatial data is one of the key data categories in today's Open Data domain. A study by the Open European Location Services (ELS) Project shows that Open Data is available from the majority of European National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authorities (NMCAs).

A total of 46 members of EuroGeographics (the Association for European National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registry Authorities) completed the respective survey. Almost all respondents (98%) indicate that their organisation provides at least some of their data free of charge. Of these, 37% make all their data available under an open licence.

Up till this moment, National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authorities face legal, economic and data interpretation barriers when publishing Open Data. This research is the first step in developing an ELS Open Data policy. In this way, the Open ELS project will define what Open Data from official sources is free, what is charged for and how the sector enables successful re-use of geospatial Open Data.
