New pilot: A Transnational Open Data Infrastructure for Travel & Tourism in Europe

Pilot in Bavaria to start this year

New technologies are starting to fundamentally redefine interactions between the demand and supply side in travel & tourism. In context of these developments, publicly funded tourism organisations in Europe are in urgent need of reinventing their roles and practices for the digital data economy in the future. A new proposed pilot project will develop a joint transnational initiative on sharing and reusing Open Data in the travel and tourism industry.

The proposed Open Data platform approach is based on the idea of active data streams and dynamic APIs that provide real-time information, which is highly relevant for decision-making processes in travel and tourism. For example, tourist sightseeing attractions with up-to-date opening hours, images and vacancies of accommodation providers, public transport timetables with pricing information, bike routes, snow reports for winter sports, eMobility sharing offers, hiking track closures or public toilet facilities.

The goal of the proposed idea is to significantly improve the quality, availability and reuse of real-time tourism information throughout Europe. This can be achieved by building a transnational Open Data infrastructure and by stimulating market environment that provides free and easy digital access to real-time travel & tourism data from public authorities, businesses and other organisations. As a first step, the proposed pilot project should demonstrate the feasibility of the approach from a technical, commercial and leadership perspective. In 2017, the Open Data platform pilot project will start in Bavaria. The project will focus on establishing a proof of concept for Bavaria and selected sub-regions and will be funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economics.

On 26 September, a Think Tank on Open Data and tourism will be held, aiming at drafting a white paper with recommendations regarding the opportunities and risks of an Open Data infrastructure for tourism. Participation in the think tank is by invitation only.

The think tank is part of the Outdoor Active Conference 2017.
