The Argentinian newspaper La Nación explores how AI can play a role in Journalism
On Wednesday 19 August, the European Data Portal (EDP) and the Support Centre for Data Sharing (SCDS) teams hosted a new Data Talks session on AI and Journalism. The teams were joined by two guests from the Argentinian newspaper La Nación: Mathias-Felipe de-Lima-Santos and Florencia Coelho.
During the session, the speakers shared how La Nación experimented with new technologies to improve news reporting in Argentina and to map the status of solar farms in Argentina. Driven by climate change concerns, there has been significant growth in the renewable energy industry worldwide. In early 2016, the former president Mauricio Macri launched an ambitious program called RenovAr, which promised to take advantage of the country’s abundant clean energy resources by promoting private renewable energy generation via an auction. La Nación decided to check the status of these solar farms by testing and applying new machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, in news production.
