Data collection and privacy

Many companies have an interest in collecting limitless data, but this also raises privacy concerns and shows the importance of GDPR compliance.

For many companies, there is no downside to limitless data collection. However, when there is an arms race for our personal data, we risk losing control over where our information winds up and how it is used. Data also consolidates power. Many big tech companies derive power from control over a vast amount of information on where consumers go, what they do and what they like.

The European Union has multiple institutional mechanisms and bodies that protect the data of EU citizens, such as the European Data Protection Board (EDPB). The EDPB makes sure that entities are compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Law Enforcement Directive, advising the European Commission on issues related to the protection of personal data and new proposed legislation in the European Union, and adopting binding decisions in disputes between national supervisory authorities.

The European Commission has published a new report on the GDPR and the way forward on 24 June 2020. The regulations and compliance with GDPR are continuously monitored and policies are improved to make sure Europe is fit for the digital age.
