A French service using cultural open data and geodata

"France explorateurs" uses open data to provide visitors with a guide and information on cultural sites across France

France explorateurs is a French application and website for visitors who want to visit cultural sites in France. The application is available on Android phones and tablets and can be used with 3G, 4G and WiFi networks. The interactive application acts as a game for users to discover tourist sites in France. Through the application, users can unlock badges of cultural sites to read background information. A badge unlocks automatically within 50 metres of the cultural site. The different types of sites (monuments, museums, natural parks, gardens, and theme parks) are portrayed with different icons.

The application provides users with the geographical coordinates, a picture, and background information of the site. The description addresses the cultural history of the site and logistical information on accessibility and whether the site is child-friendly and suitable for families. Moreover, the application provides a user rating of the cultural site (from 1 - 'not a must-see' to 5 - 'must-see'). The number of visits or frequency of visits by other users is also displayed. The application uses the historical monuments and museums dataset for the geographical location of the cultural sites and analytics, such as visitor numbers.

France explorateurs is one of the over 550 use cases published on the European Data Portal. If you are aware of another inspiring use case, share your experience and knowledge on different applications and websites using open data with the EDP via mail, Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.
