Outcomes of the World Data Viz Challenge 2018 Barcelona-Kobe

The 24 final visualisations from the Data Viz project were presented in Barcelona

On 14 November, Barcelona hosted the World Data Viz Challenge 2018 Barcelona-Kobe as part of their commitment to the Smart City Expo World Congress 2018 framework. Barcelona and Kobe have been partners for 25 years and share a commitment to promote knowledge sharing and support data-related initiatives. This event was opened and led by Mr. Taisuke Matsuzaki, the Director of ICT Development from the City of Kobe, and Ms. Mercè Fígols, who is responsible for the Open Data portal of Barcelona's City Council.

The World Data Viz Challenge 2018 is a Workshop on Data Visualisation that aims to solve cities' problems through data visualisation. Participants in the workshop were recruited from Japan and Spain. The final 24 visualisations were presented in Barcelona and were classified into four groups: mobility, incidents, public space and social portrait. Examples from the challenge are:

  • 'Discovering Barcelona', a visualisation of some important demographic aspects of the City of Barcelona such as population, immigration, emigration, birth and mortality, by Xavier Vivancos García.
  • 'Disaster countermeasures utilising visual ability', a visualisation that shows Disaster Support Facilities in Kobe by Tanaka Kaori.
