Outcome of the OPCW Conference in The Hague

EDP's Dinand Tinholt discussed AI and its impact on chemical weapons prohibition

On 19 and 20 November, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) hosted the Conference of the States Parties (CSP) to the Chemical Weapons Convention in The Hague. The OPCW is a disarmament treaty with 193 Member States that oversees the global endeavour to permanently eliminate chemical weapons globally. The CSP meets annually to implement the treaty, promote the treaty's objectives and review compliance with the treaty.

This year, the CSP discussed "Digitalisation and Disarmament: The Future is Now, are we Prepared for it?". The Conference focused on the risks and concerns associated with advances in technology in an increasingly digital world with more automation and data exchange in industrial processes, including the chemical industry.

European Data Portal's (EDP) Dinand Tinholt attended the conference and spoke about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help make the world safer. More specifically, he discussed how AI can positively impact society by assisting in the prohibition of chemical weapons through the collection and analysis of data. To accomplish this, the algorithms behind AI will need an abundance of data to make an informed decision and produce relevant insights on which chemical weapons to prohibit and why. Open data is a vital component in achieving this.
