Amazon launches its Sustainability Data Initiative

Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative will boost sustainable development through Cloud and open data

At the end of 2018, Amazon launched its Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative. The initiative aims to promote sustainability research, innovation and to facilitate data accessibility and availability to interested parties. In addition, the initiative wants to democratise access to data by making it available on Amazon Web Services (AWS), to develop new cloud access technologies and to encourage the development of communities that can exploit the benefits from increased access to shared datasets.

Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative is a collaboration between the AWS Open Data and the Amazon Sustainability team. These teams gather multiple datasets from the AWS's Open Data Registry, track data on sustainability-related topics from various institutions and co-operate with data providers such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to store data in the AWS Cloud. Examples of collected datasets are weather observations and forecast data, climate projections data, satellite imagery, air quality data, hydrological data and ocean forecast data.
