A non-EU perspective on EU regulatory activity
Recap on the Data Talks webinar with Mozilla’s Julia Reinhardt
On Wednesday 31 March, the Support Centre for Data Sharing (SCDS) and European Data Portal (EDP) team were joined by Julia Reinhardt, an expert in technology governance and public policy consultation, to discuss EU regulatory activity from a non-EU perspective.
Julia advises companies in the United States (US) on compliance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and gives strategic advice on evolving technology policies world-wide as well as the complex “global privacy patchwork”. Having represented the German government as a diplomat, most recently on the US West Coast, she had built strong relationships with Silicon Valley businesses, start-ups, institutions, and executives.
In the Data Talks, Julia shared that GDPR continues to impact businesses across the globe. In addition, she highlighted that EU regulation has widespread implications as the EU population makes up a large part of the US companies’ client base. The fear of not being compliant with regulation has led some US companies to change or even remove their products or services entirely from the European market. In the Data Talks she explains why communication between the European Union and the United States is vital to ensure the global exchange of products and services.
