Looking back at the European Big Data Value Forum 2020
“Building a strong European Data and AI Eco-system”
The European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) 2020 was held between 3 and 5 November in Berlin, Germany, with a complimentary online broadcast to a wider audience. This annual event is organised by Big Data Value Association (BDVA) in collaboration with the DFKI, Plattform Industrie 4.0, Plattform Lernende Systeme and Berlin Partner. The event brings together industry professionals, business developers, researchers, and policy makers from across Europe to discuss the different challenges and opportunities the European data economy is facing.
This year’s theme was “Building a strong European Data and AI Ecosystem”, and through various sessions key topics for Europe were addressed. For example, the development of European Data Spaces, the importance of Technology Platforms and Trust, the opportunities for market uptake, and the new challenges ahead for Data and AI within the society. This year’s edition was again a successful edition with an average of 600 participants and industry professional from over 40 countries.

The European Data Portal (EDP) at the Forum
This year, the team behind the European Data Portal (EDP) partook in the EBDVF’s programme to highlight the value of open data and to promote the use and re-use of open data across Europe. In the session, Laura van Knippenberg discussed how to share data that is not, or cannot be made, open.
Together with Esther Huyer from the Support Centre for Data Sharing, Laura presented in the session: “Public open data service digital infrastructure: (Open) data sharing facilities and tools”. This session was led by the European Commission and highlighted which mechanisms are in place to support individuals, business and organisations in finding and re-using data resources that are publicly available. The recording of this session will be live shortly.
Throughout the session various speakers presented:
- What the EC is doing to support citizens, businesses and organisations in discovering and re-using public data resources;
- What the EDP and SCDS indicatives are and how people can make meaningful use of it; and
- What the Context Broker is and how this platform is best used by means of concrete examples.

Bringing open data to the next level by opening up high-value datasets is a major point of the EU Digital Single Market strategy. Another important point in the strategy is providing guidance on the sharing of data that cannot be made open. The SCDS plays a vital role in that as it is a platform dedicated to providing legal and technical support for data sharing and offer a common and a knowledge base to researchers and practitioners.
