The State of Open Humanitarian Data
Read UN OCHA's latest report on the available and missing data across humanitarian operations
In January 2020, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) released a new report that aims to increase awareness on the available and missing data across humanitarian operations. The report, titled "The State of Open Humanitarian Data", is based on the data shared by dozens of partners through the Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX) platform as measured through the Data Grid, a feature that prioritises core data into six categories:
- Affected people
- Coordination and context
- Food security and nutrition
- Geography and infrastructure
- Health and education
- Population and socio-economy
When HDX was launched in 2014, the platform contained around 800 datasets. As of 2019, the number has risen to over 17,000 datasets, covering the active humanitarian crisis from Afghanistan to Yemen. These datasets are being shared by dozens of organisations across the world, including the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). In addition, the platform was accessed by over 600,000 users across the world.
