Studybugs: Mapping the spread of diseases

Studybugs collects anonymised data on what bugs are going around in the United Kingdom

Studybugs is an application that provides a unique communication platform for children’s health, used by thousands of schools and parents across the UK. In partnership with the NHS and other public health organisations, Studybugs tracks what bugs are going around and passes on expert advice to keep children healthy and in school. The application is free of charge due to funding from public health institutions.

Studybugs focusses on schools as these are common places where diseases easily spread. Kids can register themselves as they enter the classroom with one click and parents can report when their children are sick at home. The application also offers the opportunity for children with asthma to participate in research to improve the health of children with asthma. With the use of open data, Studybugs contributes to improving public health research and the health of schoolchildren in the United Kingdom.

Studybugs is one of many initiatives in which open data is used to improve public health, protect vulnerable groups (such as children with asthma) and prepare society for the spread of diseases. Additionally, this initiative reduces the costs of public health service due to preventive measures.

Studybugs is one of the over 550 use cases published on the European Data Portal. If you are aware of another inspiring use case, share your experience and knowledge on different applications and websites using open data with the EDP via mail, Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.
