Organising events on Open Data is an important driver for promoting Open Data, as it helps raise awareness about the value of Open Data and brings publishers and re-users of data together. Spain leads by example in this regard as it will be organising several data-related events in the coming period.
The City Council of Madrid has just launched the second call for the Data Journalism Awards and the Datathon of the City of Madrid, with the intention to encourage the use of the public information available on the Open Data portal of the City of Madrid, and to enhance transparency in the city. For the Datathon, the organisation invites users of Open Data to present ideas or projects that are (partially) based on Open Data from the City of Madrid. Ideas or projects must be submitted between 1 June and 1 October. The winners of both the Data Journalism Awards and the Datathon will be announced on 15 December 2017.
In addition, the Data Science Awards 2017 will take place in October during the Big Data Week in Madrid. Here, prizes will be awarded in three categories: companies working with big data, scientists working with big data and journalists working with big data. Candidates can submit their proposal by 30 June, and are invited to present their idea or project to the jury until 15 September.
