Can Open Data make Bristol Britain's "Smartest City"?

"Bristol is Open": a programmable city region

With a joint venture between the City council and Bristol University, Bristol is making big steps in becoming one of the worlds smartest cities. The project combines policy developments on the release of public data with the introduction of new technologies in the physical architecture of the city. For example by releasing around 200 anonymised data-sets on pollution, energy use, health and other matters.

This information is gathered and shared by a network comprising 1,500 radio-linked lampposts, hundreds of kilometres of fibre-optic cable running under the city's streets, and a mile-long stretch of public Wi-Fi spots. All of this runs on "CityOS", the open source operating system developed by the city itself to perfectly fits it needs.
