Successful Annual Smart Data Conference in Berlin

Data commercialisation and data protection central themes at annual Smart Data conference in Germany

At the Smart Data Annual Conference, which took place in Berlin, Germany on 14 November, over 300 participants and experts exchanged their views on the data economy and the concept of 'Smart Data'. The question of whether 'Smart Data made in Europe' can be realised despite or precisely because of the comparatively strict data protection was at the centre of the discussions during this congress in Berlin.

The event was organised by the German Federal Ministry of Economics. With the words "We Europeans have to show that we can be innovative and still receive data protection" Gesche Joost, Internet Ambassador of the Federal Government for the European Commission, brought the European dilemma of Big and Open Data to the point. It was also stressed that data protection is a key success factor in sustainable business models. A gap still exists between data protection and data security on the one hand and the economic use of data on the other. It is important that every medium-sized company knows how to best deal with their data and make the most use of it. As shown in a recent report, Open Data offers a huge market potential where companies should reap the benefits from.

Germany is pursuing this goal with its "Smart Data - Innovations from data"-program. This program will run until 2018, and includes 13 lighthouse projects to open up the future market of big-data technologies in Germany. Smart Data is part of the new high-tech strategy and the Digital Agenda of the German Federal Government.
