The European Journalism Centre

Open Data as a key enabler in journalism

Since 1992, the European Journalism Centre (EJC) has been building a sustainable, ethical and innovative future for journalism through grants, events, training, research, and media development. The EJC is an international non-profit organisation that connects journalists with new ideas. Their data initiatives help journalists understand and capitalise on the importance of data. The EJC Data Journalism programme is not specifically about Open Data, however Open Data is the most commonly used source of intelligence for journalists, because of its accessibility and cost-effectiveness.

In 2019, the European Journalism Centre will be launching datajournalism.com, the world's largest data journalism learning community. The launch will centre around the publication of the second edition of the Data Journalism Handbook. The journalist community has evolved substantially from the time of the first edition of the Handbook. Data journalism practices are more mature and much more common, many journalists have developed the necessary skills and today about 18% journalists consider themselves as having some data expertise. However, technical skills to access, clean, and analyse data remain a general barrier to using data in the newsroom. Read more about Open Data and journalism on the EDP.
