Launch of "Bus Open Data Service" in early 2020
The UK is launching a service that will allow users to plan their journey across England down to the minute
In early 2020, the Department for Transport in the United Kingdom will launch the project Bus Open Data Service. The project will collect and share bus location data in addition to standardising and publishing information from operators, enabling users to plan routes, estimate journey times, and evaluate the costs before their trip. Thus, this service will enable passengers across England to plan their journeys down to the minute and provide them with real-time bus location to keep them informed. Information on routes and timetables will be available in early 2020.
The Bus Open Data Service will by a decision made by the UK Government in 2016 to require bus operators to provide route and timetable data by the end of 2020 and provide fare, ticket and location data by 2021 (which will be available and launched on the service in the same year). This new regulation will make it easier for people to use the buses and help to keep prices down by providing greater transparency across different operators.
