Hacking data science in Tartu, Estonia

Garage48 Open & Big Data 2016

From 21 to 23 October, Garage 48, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, Information System Authority of Estonia and the Institute of Computer science of the University of Tartu are organising a hackathon on data science. During this event which will take place in Tartu, participants will get together to explore and develop applications and ideas based on Open and Big Data.

Over the past few decades, both public and private sector organisations have gathered a great amount of data. Using and analysing this data offers opportunities to generate new knowledge or new applications, for example to predict crime, traffic of visitor behaviour. While the big technological giants such as Google or Facebook are already relying heavily on Big Data analysis, this hackathon wants to explore what more can be done with Open and Big Data. To do so, both the government and various private companies have provided a wide list of data sets that can be used for the development of smart, creative and potentially lucrative applications.

The event will start on the evening of Friday 21 October with a presentation of the challenge and invite the participants to get creative. With this goal in mind, the participants are then encouraged to work on their idea throughout the weekend after which, on Sunday, the winners will be announced.
